Abstract: This paper develops an Expert System (ES) that augment decision-making for the ‘railway-track maintenance and renewal’ operation at Indian Railways. After consultations with experts in three selected areas (rails, sleepers and ballast) to understand the railway track operations a set of rules were formulated. Using the open-source CLIPS tool and based upon the set of rules, a user-friendly single interface system is designed for decision-making. This ES thus developed. through the interface, aids the end-user in the decision-making.
