Abstract: The chapter locates Forster's writing in the tradition of European friendship and explains how and where he sought to move beyond it. It explicates the success he achieved over his oeuvre in creating better possibilities for desire in a friendship that was to be advanced in and for life rather than be motivated by the maintenance of the friend beyond death through legacies and memorialization.
